Which school should my student attend?

The school board establishes an attendance boundary for each school; students who reside within the attendance boundary are entitled to attend that school. Questions about school attendance boundaries must be directed to the local school board.

We are moving. How do I change my student's address?

All address changes must be made at the school office; STS does not accept address changes for security reasons. 

Once STS receives the address change from the school, transportation will be arranged.  Normal processing time is approximately 3 business days after you've been to the school office.  In September, processing time may be up to 7 business days.  Parents/guardians are responsible for transportation during this timeframe.

Make sure you ask the school for the Student ID number so you can login to the Parent Portal to check transportation arrangements.  Write it down or store it in your smartphone.

Is my student eligible for school busing?

All policies and procedures that govern eligibility can be found on our policies page.

Elementary students who live more than 1.6 kms from the designated school are eligible for bus service.

Secondary students who live more than 3.2 kms from the designated school are eligible for bus service.

How can I find out if my address is in the bus zone?

Where is my student's bus stop?

Bus stop locations are published in the Parent Portal; please login to find bus stop locations and times.  Schools can also provide you bus stop information.

For security reasons, STS does not give out bus stop locations and times over the phone nor via email.

What is the "non-bus zone"?

The non-bus zone is the area around a school where school bus service is not provided. Parents/guardians are responsible for how the student gets to and from school.  

What is a “primary address”?

This is the primary residential address on file with the school for your student. Transportation eligibility is based on this address. Changes to this address file can only be made at the school.

My child goes to a babysitter in the bus zone but our address is not. Can my child get on the bus at the babysitters?

How do I arrange temporary transportation?

Temporary transportation is not offered for construction areas, broken bones, short-term stays at other residences, birthday parties, lessons etc as STS offers fixed scheduled service.

Can a licensed day care facility have a bus stop created?

Student Transportation Services will consider a bus stop after receiving a request from the daycare. A day care facility may qualify for a bus stop if it is located within the attendance boundary and bus zone for the school and near an existing bus route. Buses will not be rerouted to create service for a daycare facility.

How does STS select a bus stop location?

STS is responsible for selecting bus stop locations.  Door to door transportation is not provided.  Parents are responsible for the students travel to and from a bus stop.

Community stops are selected whenever possible so that many students can be picked up at one bus stop location.  Greenspaces, community mailboxes and corners are commonly used.

In a rural environment, the bus will pick up close to the residence, but is not required to stop directly at the residence.

I do not like the bus stop location. What can I do?

Students are expected to travel from their home to meet the bus - up to 800 meters for an elementary student and up to 1.6 kms for a highschool student.   Parents/guardians are ultimately responsible for student safety to, from and at the school bus stop.

While parents/guardians often want a bus stop moved closer to the house because of younger infants at home or municipal matters such as no sidewalks, traffic speed, and/or construction etc, students in the non-bus zone and bus zone face the same circumstances and therefore will not result in the bus stop being moved.

Due to the volume of requests for stop location reviews received in September, these will be considered in October.

We have a concern with the bus driver. Who do we contact?

Contact the school principal and/or bus company to discuss your concerns. If you are unable to resolve the situation with the school principal and/or the bus company, contact Student Transportation Services. Click here for phone numbers for the bus companies by branch location:

Where do I find the Student ID Number?

You need a Student ID number to login to the Parent Portal.  For security reasons, STS does not give this number out over the phone.

Your Student ID number is available from the school office. Write it down or save it in your smartphone.

Where can I find my bus run number?

It is listed in the Parent Portal and in the window on the side of the bus. It is also available by contacting STS or the school.

Who decides if the buses are delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather?

Your local school bus company is responsible for deciding if the buses operate or not during inclement weather. Watch this video for more information on bus cancellations:

The bus companies review the conditions in the early morning and decide based on the information available at that time.  The early decision time is necessary to provide time for school bus drivers, school staff and parents so that you can make necessary arrangements for your family.

The decision to delay or cancel buses is made no later than 6:30 AM.  Once the decision is made, information is posted to our website, and the BusPlanner Delays App (available for iOS and Android).

Are delays or cancellations county-wide?

Not always. Sometimes the weather conditions are the same throughout the county and the entire county is delayed or cancelled. Other times, there are only portions of the county which need to be delayed or cancelled. Know your bus run number to check the school bus delay/cancellation list on the site.

Bus delays or cancellations are posted online by 6:30 AM.

How do I know if school buses are delayed or cancelled?

Bus delays and/or cancellations are posted at on the day of the inclement weather event by 6:30 AM.

I heard conflicting information on the radio or on social media. What should I do?

Go to the site. The website is the official source of bus delay or cancellation information.  STS is not responsible for the accuracy of information beyond what is posted on its site. 

Buses are running but I don’t think it’s safe. What can I do?

You are ultimately responsible for the safety of your student to and from the bus stop and deciding if your student rides the bus.

You are also welcome to call the bus company who transports your student to pass along your feedback.

My child left his/her personal belongings on the bus. Who do I contact?

Can my child eat on the bus?

Children can not eat on the bus due to the potential for severe allergic reactions of other students.

Why are there no seatbelts on buses?

After considerable crash testing, Transport Canada determined that seatbelts might actually cause more harm to students on school buses. Tests revealed that occupants who were wearing lap belts were more likely to suffer serious head and neck injuries. Also, shoulder belts can not be adjusted to safely restrain smaller children. If seatbelts were on school buses, younger children would require an adult to buckle/unbuckle the occupant and this could be problematic in an emergency situation. Can I make special arrangements directly with the bus driver?

No. The bus driver is an employee of the bus company and the bus company is under contract with Student Transportation Services. Student Transportation Services does not permit the bus driver or bus company to make, alter or amend the service provided.

When will I get the JK/SK bus tag in the mail?

JK/SK tags are mailed out approximately 10 days before school starts, so expect it to arrive the week before school.

If your student loses their tag, see the school office for a new one.

If your student changes afternoon bus assignments, they will need a new bus tag. We recommend that you wait for the new bus tag to arrive before your student takes the afternoon bus.

What is an "in-service delay"?

Once the buses start their routes, buses may become delayed due to traffic, construction, emergency road closures and weather.  These in-service delays are a routine part of commuting. Where possible bus companies will post in-service delays that are greater than 15 minutes will be posted by the bus company to the delays and cancellations page at

In the event that weather conditions deteriorate while on route, bus drivers are trained to pull over to a safe spot and wait until the conditions improve before carrying on.
