What is Active School Travel Planning?
The goal of Active School Travel planning is to minimize safety concerns and barriers to choosing active modes of travel. Initiatives are not designed to make driving easier for some parents. Less cars do not equal more opportunity to drive, rather less cars result in a safer school environment where students feel educated and encouraged to choose active modes of travel daily.

Experiencing School Zone congestion issues?
Parents and guardians also play a big role in school zone safety. Cars dropping students off create traffic mayhem around school sites. Consider using your school’s Active School Travel Map to help determine alternate locations around the schools to drop off students.

Is bus ridership low?
Riding the school bus is like taking a big carpool to school! One vehicle to transport many students, decreases the number of vehicles on the road and in the school zone. The iWalk then iBus Banner is a great way to encourage eligible students to ride the school on a more regular basis. Print, hang and have students sign the banner every day for a week as a fun way to track who has taken the bus and/or walked/wheeled to school.

Are students interested in walking/wheeling to school, but need some encouragement?
Encouragement activities are a great way to increase the number of students choosing active travel to get to and from school. For a School-Wide initiative try organizing the Spring into Spring Competition where classrooms compete against one another over the course of a 1-week period. Another fun activity is the Active Travel Passport. Print and distribute to interested students and see who can fill their card the fastest.
